Blurry video

A soft or fuzzy picture is rarely a fault; it is usually the result of the video signal type you are using. The Super Nintendo's output ranges from blurry composite to razor sharp RGB, so the first question is always which cable and connection you have.

Check your signal type

  • Composite (single yellow cable) is inherently the blurriest. Moving to S-Video or RGB is the biggest improvement available.
  • S-Video is much sharper and needs no modification, only the right cable and a compatible input.
  • RGB is the sharpest analog option but depends on your console revision and any required amp.

Console specific softening

Some single chip 1CHIP consoles apply a built in blur filter that softens the image even over RGB. A de-blur modification removes this for extra clarity, and is often combined with an RGB bypass. composite de-blur

Display matters too

On a modern flat panel, cheap analog to HDMI converters add their own softness and lag. A quality upscaler fed an RGB signal, or an internal HDMI mod, gives a far sharper result than a basic converter dongle.

Before assuming hardware trouble, confirm you are using the best signal your console and display support. The jump from composite to RGB or S-Video resolves the vast majority of blur complaints.
