What you'll need

Your shopping list depends on how deep you go. The flashcart path needs almost nothing; internal mods need tools and patience.

For flashcart play

• An FXPak Pro cartridge, ideally in a multi-region shell.
• A quality SD card (a modest size is plenty; reliability matters more than capacity).
• A card reader for your computer to copy files.

For region-free and switchless mods

• A SuperCIC or Super CIC++ chip programmed for your install.
• A temperature-controlled soldering iron, fine solder, flux, and thin wire.
• Tweezers, a multimeter for continuity checks, and isopropyl alcohol for cleanup.
• An anti-static wrist strap.

For video improvement

• An RGB bypass amp kit suited to your board (older boards benefit most).
• An RGB SCART or component cable matched to your display.
