GameCube video output overview
The GameCube can output video in several ways, ranging from soft composite to crisp digital HDMI. Which options you have depends on your console model and what cables or mods you add. This page compares them so you can pick a path before diving into the detail pages.
The model divide
Early DOL-001 consoles include a digital AV port that carries a clean digital signal, the basis for the best video mods. Later DOL-101 units removed that port, leaving only analog output. If pristine image quality matters, a DOL-001 is the unit to find.
| Method | Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Composite | Lowest | Universal, soft, blurry |
| S-Video | Better | NTSC consoles only |
| RGB SCART | Excellent | PAL friendly, CRT |
| Component | Excellent | Rare official cable |
| Digital HDMI | Best | GCVideo mods, DOL-001 |
Choosing a path
- For a CRT, RGB SCART or component gives a sharp analog picture.
- For a modern flat panel, a GCVideo-based HDMI mod is the cleanest route.
- If you only have composite, a good upscaler helps tame the softness.
