Digital AV port

The digital AV port

On early DOL-001 consoles, a second port sits beside the familiar analog multi-out. This is the digital AV port, and it carries an uncompressed digital video signal straight from the console's video chip before it is converted to analog. It is the foundation of every high-quality GameCube video mod.

Why it is special

Because the signal is digital and taken before any analog conversion, there is no noise, ringing, or blur introduced by the console's own circuitry. A device that taps this port can reconstruct a perfectly clean picture. The original official Component cable used it, which is why that cable produced such a sharp image.

What you can do with it

  • Fit a GCVideo-based HDMI adapter such as the popular plug-in models.
  • Use the rare official Component cable on a compatible display.
  • Enjoy lag-light, artefact-free output ideal for the Game Boy Player.

The catch

Later DOL-101 consoles dropped this port entirely to cut costs, leaving only analog output. There is no simple way to add it back, so model choice is everything if you want digital video.

Check your console

Look at the back: two rectangular ports means DOL-001 with digital out; a single analog port means DOL-101.
