FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to solder anything?
Not necessarily. PicoBoot requires soldering, but you can run homebrew from a boot disc or a save exploit without it. An SD adapter in the serial port needs no soldering at all.
Which console model should I get?
The DOL-001 is preferred because it keeps the digital AV port for high-quality video mods and the Game Boy Player. Later DOL-101 units dropped that port.
Will homebrew brick my console?
Software homebrew run through Swiss is very low risk and reversible. PicoBoot is a hardware change, but it is also recoverable if installed carefully. Always keep a backup loader handy.
Can I keep my original discs?
Yes. You can dump your own discs to SD with Swiss and load the backups, sparing the disc and laser from wear while keeping the originals safe.
What SD card should I use?
A reliable, genuine card of modest size, formatted FAT32 with a 32 KB cluster size. Huge or counterfeit cards cause most detection problems.
Is emulation any good?
For 8- and 16-bit systems, yes. The hardware is not powerful enough for later consoles, but classic libraries run well.
Do I need a Broadband Adapter?
Only if you want LAN play or network booting. For most homebrew, an SD card is all you need.
