Disc read errors

If you open the console to reach the drive, power off and unplug first, never look into the laser lens, and discharge static before touching the board.

Disc read errors

Read errors show up as a game that will not load, freezes part way, or returns to an error screen. The cause is usually a dirty disc, a dirty lens, or an aging laser. Start with the easy, non-invasive checks.

  1. Clean the disc: wipe the data side with a soft cloth from centre outward, and check for deep scratches.
  2. Try other discs: if one disc fails but others read, the disc is the problem, not the drive.
  3. Clean the lens: with the console open, gently wipe the laser lens with a swab and a little high-purity isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry.
  4. Check the sled: ensure the laser moves freely on its rails without grinding or sticking.
  5. Adjust the laser: as a last resort, a tiny potentiometer adjustment can restore reads on a worn laser.

Patterns worth noting

  • Fails on larger or dual-layer games but reads small ones: a weakening laser.
  • Errors near the end of long games: outer-edge read trouble.
  • All discs fail suddenly: dirt, a dead laser, or a drive cable fault.

Sidestep the drive

If the laser is failing, loading backups from SD through Swiss avoids the optical drive entirely.
