Cleaning
Cleaning and care
A GameCube that has sat for two decades collects dust, grime, and sometimes sticky residue. Regular cleaning keeps it cool, quiet, and reliable. None of this requires special skill, just patience and the right materials.
Outside the console
- Wipe the shell with a slightly damp microfibre cloth; avoid harsh solvents that dull the plastic.
- Clear dust from the vents with compressed air or a soft brush.
- Clean controller ports and the multi-out with a dry brush; never force liquid inside.
Controllers
Sticky buttons and grimy sticks respond well to isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. For a deeper clean, the controller can be opened to wipe the membranes and stick housing, but go gently with the ribbon cables.
Memory cards and discs
Clean disc surfaces with a soft cloth wiped from centre to edge, never in circles. Keep memory card contacts free of dust; a dry wipe is usually enough.
Storage habits
- Store the console upright or flat in a dust-free spot, out of direct sun.
- Unplug during long storage to protect against power surges.
- Keep discs in cases to avoid scratches that cause read errors.
Use the right alcohol
High-purity isopropyl alcohol evaporates cleanly and will not harm plastics. Avoid household cleaners with added oils or fragrances.
