Component
Component video
Component video splits the picture into three signals carried over separate cables, delivering a sharp, high-bandwidth analog image. On the GameCube it supports progressive scan in many games, making it one of the best analog options for displays that accept it.
The official cable
Nintendo sold an official Component cable that drew its signal from the digital AV port on DOL-001 consoles. Inside the cable plug sat a small chip that converted the digital signal to analog component. Because the source was digital and clean, the picture was excellent. The cable was produced in limited numbers and is now expensive and sought after.
Why it is rare
- It only works on consoles with the digital AV port.
- Production ended early, so supply is tiny.
- Collector demand has pushed prices high.
Modern alternatives
Rather than chase the original cable, many people fit a GCVideo-based HDMI adapter to the same digital port. It taps the identical clean signal and outputs digital HDMI, often for less money and with extra features like scanline emulation. For CRT users who specifically want component, the official cable remains the authentic choice.
Progressive scan
Many games offer a 480p mode over component; Swiss can also force progressive output on titles that support it.
