Common errors

Common errors and what they mean

The GameCube and its homebrew tools surface a handful of recurring errors. Knowing what each points to saves a lot of guesswork. Below are the ones you are most likely to meet and where to look first.

System and disc messages

  • Disc could not be read: the classic optical error. Suspect a dirty disc, a dirty lens, or an aging laser before anything else.
  • Please turn off the power: a generic fault prompt, often a failed disc read or an interrupted load.
  • Memory card needs formatting: the card is unreadable or corrupt. Recover saves before formatting.

Swiss and homebrew messages

  • No SD card found: a format, card, or adapter problem. FAT32 with a 32 KB cluster size resolves most cases.
  • Unsupported file or failed to load: the image format does not match the loading method, or the file is corrupt.
  • DI errors: drive interface complaints usually trace back to the optical drive or its cable.

How to use an error

Treat the message as a category, not a verdict. A read error names the drive subsystem; an SD error names storage; a load error names the file or patch. Match the message to its subsystem, then work through the relevant troubleshooting page.

Note the exact wording

Write down the precise message before rebooting. Small wording differences can point to different causes.
