Controller issues
Disconnect the controller before opening it. Inside are small springs and ribbon cables that tear or spring loose, so work slowly over a clear surface.
Controller issues
Controller faults are common on hardware this old, but most are mechanical and fixable. Sort the symptom first, since cleaning, a switch, and a stick module are very different repairs.
- Test inputs: run a controller test homebrew to see exactly which buttons, triggers, and axes misbehave.
- Reseat the connection: unplug and firmly replug the controller, and try a different port to rule out a console-side fault.
- Clean the offenders: sticky or dead buttons usually clean up with isopropyl alcohol on the membrane and board pads.
- Service triggers and switches: a dead trigger click or Z button is often a worn micro-switch that needs cleaning or replacing.
- Address stick drift: a drifting analog or C-stick points to a worn potentiometer module that may need replacing.
Symptom guide
- Stick drift: worn stick module, replace for a lasting fix.
- Sticky buttons: residue under the cap, cleaned away.
- Dead button: torn membrane contact or a failed switch.
- Nothing works: a broken cable or a console-side port fault.
Test the port too
If a controller fails in one port but works in another, the console's controller port may be the real problem.
