AV troubleshooting

Before opening the console or pulling cables, power off and unplug the unit. Static and live boards do not mix; ground yourself before touching anything internal.

Diagnosing video problems

Video faults usually come from cables, the display, or a mod, not the console itself. Work through the likely causes in order rather than assuming the worst.

  1. Confirm the basics: check the cable is fully seated in both the console and display, the television is on the correct input, and the power light is on.
  2. Swap the cable: try a known-good cable. A bent pin or broken wire in the multi-out plug is a common culprit.
  3. Test the display: connect the console to a different television to rule out the panel or input.
  4. Check the mode: a console set to progressive or a mode your display rejects can show a black screen. Reset to default video output.
  5. Inspect a mod: if you have an HDMI adapter, reseat it on the digital port and test the analog output to isolate the fault.

Common symptoms

  • Black and white or rolling: usually a region or sync mismatch between console and display.
  • No signal over HDMI: reseat the adapter and confirm the console is a DOL-001 with the digital port.
  • Snowy or noisy: a failing cable or poor connection on the analog multi-out.

Isolate one variable

Change one thing at a time. Swapping cable, display, and mode separately tells you exactly where the fault lives.
