Memory cards

Memory cards

The memory-card slots do double duty in GameCube homebrew. They store your save data as always, but they are also the gateway for two important entry points.

Saves and the game-save exploit

A standard memory card holds game saves, and one of those slots is where the game-save exploit lives. You write a specially crafted save with a tool like GCMM, load the matching retail game, and it hands control to Swiss. Backing up your existing saves with GCMM first is strongly recommended.

SD through the card slot

The SD Gecko and SD Media Launcher are adapters shaped like a memory card that hold a microSD or SD card instead. Inserted into a card slot, they let Swiss read storage on any GameCube, making them the universal alternative to SP2-based SD2SP2.

Universal option

Because every GameCube has memory-card slots, an SD Gecko works on both the DOL-001 and the DOL-101. It is the go-to when Serial Port 2 is missing.

Tips

  • Format SD cards as FAT32 for use with adapters and Swiss.
  • Genuine memory cards are more reliable than clones for storing saves.
  • Keep backups. Memory cards can fail with age, so copy important saves off them periodically.
