CFW-compatible models
Which Models Can Run CFW
Custom firmware is the most complete modding experience available on the PlayStation 3, but it is only possible on a specific subset of hardware. CFW replaces the console's official firmware with a modified version that stays active permanently, giving you the deepest level of control. The catch is that the underlying hardware must support it, and not every model does.
The Compatible Hardware
Two families qualify: every original Fat console, and the early Slim revisions. Anything newer was redesigned by Sony in ways that block CFW entirely, leaving HEN as the only option.
| Model Family | CECH Range | CFW Compatible |
|---|---|---|
| Fat | CECHA–CECHL | Yes |
| Slim (early) | CECH-2000 / 2500 | Yes |
| Slim (late) | CECH-3000 | No (HEN only) |
| Super Slim | CECH-4000 | No (HEN only) |
The Rule of Thumb
If a console can run CFW, it can also run HEN. The reverse is not true. CFW-compatible models give you both paths, so they offer the most flexibility.
Installing CFW on a model that does not support it is not possible and attempting workarounds can brick the console. Confirm your CECH number before starting.
If maximum capability matters to you, target a Fat or an early Slim. Everything else should be planned around HEN running on hybrid firmware instead.
