Identifying your model

Identifying Your Model

Before choosing a modding path, you need to know exactly which PlayStation 3 you own. The single most important detail is the CECH number, a model code printed on the sticker label found on the underside or rear of every console. This code determines whether your system can run full CFW or is limited to HEN.

Reading the Label

Flip the console over and locate the regulatory sticker. You are looking for a string beginning with CECH followed by letters or digits, such as CECHA01, CECH-2001A, or CECH-4301C. The same label also lists the serial number and the power rating, which can help confirm the hardware revision.

What the Codes Tell You

  • CECHA through CECHL indicates an original "Fat" console.
  • CECH-20xx and CECH-25xx indicate early "Slim" units.
  • CECH-30xx is a later Slim revision.
  • CECH-40xx indicates a "Super Slim" console.

Why It Matters

Two consoles that look identical on a shelf can have completely different capabilities. A Fat unit will accept CFW, while a Super Slim of the same era will not. Always confirm the CECH number first.

If the sticker is worn or missing, you can also read the model identifier from within the system settings menu under the console information screen, which reports the same hardware family.
