OFW to CFW

Custom firmware can only be installed on hardware-compatible PS3 models. Flashing the wrong build, or interrupting the process, can permanently brick the console. Confirm your model is supported before you begin.

From Official Firmware to CFW

This overview explains the journey from stock official firmware (OFW) to a fully featured custom firmware (CFW) setup for running legal homebrew. CFW replaces the system software entirely, unlocking the ability to launch unsigned applications, backup managers, and developer tools that the retail firmware blocks.

The most important question is whether your specific console can accept CFW at all. Older "Fat" and early "Slim" units are typically compatible; later hardware revisions are locked and must use the HEN path instead. Knowing which group you fall into shapes everything that follows.

  1. Identify your model
Check your hardware revision to confirm CFW compatibility. If it is not supported, follow the PS3HEN route instead.
  2. Prepare media
Format a USB drive to FAT32 and gather the CFW package, such as an Evilnat build, that matches your firmware version.
  3. Install the CFW
Apply the CFW from USB through the system's update menu, much like installing an ordinary firmware update.
  4. Add managers
Once CFW is running, install homebrew managers like webMAN MOD or multiMAN to organize your legal content.

The detailed walkthrough pages cover each stage in turn. Read them fully before touching your console, and never power off mid-install.
