FTP & File Transfers
Moving files onto and off of a PlayStation 3 is one of the most common homebrew tasks, whether you are installing games, backing up saves, or swapping themes. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) over your home network is usually the most convenient method, and the major managers include an FTP server built in.
How it works
Both webMAN MOD and multiMAN can run an FTP server directly on the console. Once it is active, you connect from a computer using any FTP client, browse the PS3's filesystem, and drag files in either direction over the network — no need to constantly shuffle a USB drive.
- Enable the FTP server in your manager and note the console's IP address
- Open an FTP client on your PC and connect to that IP address
- Log in with the credentials your manager specifies
- Browse to the target folder and transfer your files
USB as an alternative
When a network transfer is slow or unavailable, a USB drive still works well, especially for very large game files. FAT32 drives are widely compatible but cap individual files at 4 GB, so large titles may need splitting.
FTP exposes your console's filesystem on the network. Use it only on a trusted home network, and change any default password if your manager allows it.
Tip
A wired Ethernet connection makes FTP transfers dramatically faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. FTP network
