Installing CFW

Only install CFW on a confirmed CFW-compatible model. Never disconnect power, remove the USB drive, or shut down while the firmware is being written. An interrupted flash can leave the console unbootable.

Installing CFW: High-Level Walkthrough

Installing custom firmware on a compatible PS3 closely mirrors a normal system update. The console reads a firmware package from external media and writes it over the existing software. The difference is simply the package itself, which is a CFW build such as Evilnat rather than Sony's official release.

Match your version

Always choose a CFW build whose version equals or exceeds your current firmware. Downgrading firmware on some models is restricted, so picking the correct package up front avoids a failed update.

  1. Prepare the drive
Format a USB stick to FAT32 and copy the CFW package into the expected update folder on the drive.
  2. Connect and open settings
Plug the drive into the console and open the system update option from the settings menu.
  3. Update from storage media
Choose to update from connected storage. The console detects the package and asks you to accept the install.
  4. Let it complete
The system writes the firmware and reboots on its own. Wait patiently until it returns to the home screen.
  5. Verify
Open system information to confirm the CFW version string now appears, indicating a successful install.

With CFW running you can move on to installing your preferred homebrew managers and finishing setup.
