Error codes
Common PS3 Error Codes Explained
The PS3 reports problems as eight-character codes that begin with a prefix hinting at the category. Knowing how to read them turns a cryptic number into a clear next step. Errors Reference
How to Read a Code
Codes starting with 8071 are almost always network related. Codes starting with 8002 usually point at storage, downloads, or content. Hardware faults instead show as blinking lights and beeps rather than on-screen codes.
Frequently Seen Codes
| Code | Meaning | First Step |
|---|---|---|
| 80710092 | Network connection timed out | Set custom DNS, go wired |
| 80710102 | Cannot connect to server | Restart router, check DNS |
| 8001000B | General connection error | Retest connection |
| 80010514 | Disc read failure | Clean disc and lens |
| 80031150 | System settings corrupt | Restore default settings |
| 8002F147 | Update install failed | Reinstall firmware |
General Approach
- Note the prefix to identify the category before doing anything else.
- For network codes, test the connection and try custom DNS.
- For disc or storage codes, rebuild the database from Safe Mode.
If the console shows beeps and a flashing red light instead of a code, treat it as a hardware fault and consult the YLOD guide.
