Installing .pkg Titles

Digital PlayStation 3 content is distributed as .pkg files. These are the same package format Sony uses for store downloads, and on a CFW or HEN console they can be installed directly. Use this for digital titles you own, along with their matching license files where required.

What you need

  • A working package installer, such as the one built into your XMB or a manager like multiMAN or IRISMAN.
  • The .pkg file itself.
  • A matching .rap license file if the content is DRM-locked. RAPs are placed in the system's exdata folder so the license activates.

Installation steps

  1. Copy the .pkg to the console's internal drive or to USB storage the installer can read.
  2. Open your installer and choose Install Package Files.
  3. Select the package and wait for it to finish; an icon appears on the XMB.
  4. If the title needs a license, copy the matching .rap so the game activates, then launch it.

Large packages can take several minutes. Do not power off the console mid-install or the data may be left corrupt and need re-installing.

After installing

Installed packages behave like store downloads and sit alongside your other titles. Updates also ship as packages, so the same process applies when patching a game you own. note
