Internal HDD
The Internal HDD
Every PlayStation 3 ships with a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive, the same form factor used in laptops. Sony designed this drive to be user-replaceable, so upgrading to a larger or faster disk is one of the most worthwhile improvements you can make for a game library.
Why upgrade
- More space — stock drives fill quickly once you store disc backups and digital titles.
- Faster loading — internal storage loads games more quickly than most USB drives.
- Reliability — replacing an aging factory drive reduces the risk of failure.
Choosing a drive
Use a 2.5-inch SATA drive that is no more than 9.5mm thick so it fits the bay. Both hard drives and SSDs work; an SSD is quieter and quicker, though the console's interface caps the real-world speed gain.
Back up your saves and content before swapping drives. A new drive is blank and the system will reformat it on first boot, erasing anything previously stored.
The swap
- Power down fully and remove the drive bay cover.
- Unscrew the caddy, fit the new drive, and reseat it firmly.
- Reassemble, then boot — the console formats the drive automatically.
- Reinstall firmware or HEN as needed and restore your content.
After the upgrade, your managers will see the larger capacity immediately. note
