CFW won't boot

CFW Won't Boot or Fails to Install

A custom firmware update either errors out during installation or installs but the console refuses to start past the boot logo. CFW Install

Likely Causes

  • Your model is not CFW-compatible. Only consoles vulnerable to the factory service exploit can run true CFW; many later units are HEN-only.
  • A corrupt or wrong-version update file (PUP) on the USB drive.
  • The USB drive is formatted incorrectly or the folder structure is wrong.
  • A failed flash left the firmware partition inconsistent.

Fixes

  1. Verify hardware compatibility first. Check your minimum factory firmware against published compatibility lists before flashing anything.
  2. Re-download the CFW PUP and confirm its checksum, then place it at PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP on a FAT32 USB drive.
  3. Boot into Safe Mode by holding power until the second beep, then choose the system update option to install from USB.
  4. If installation still fails partway, the prior firmware may be damaged. A factory service restore is often the only recovery path.

Never power off during a firmware install. An interrupted flash is the most common cause of a permanently bricked console.

HEN Alternative

If your console cannot take CFW, PS3HEN delivers most of the same homebrew features without touching the firmware partition, and it is far safer to apply.
