PS2 backward compat
PlayStation 2 Backward Compatibility
PS2 support on the PlayStation 3 is far more limited than PS1 support, and it depends entirely on which model you own. Over the console's lifetime Sony gradually stripped out the components and software needed for PS2 playback as a cost-saving measure, so only the earliest units can run a PlayStation 2 library natively.
Which models qualify
- CECHA and CECHB launch models include actual PS2 hardware inside, giving them the broadest and most accurate compatibility.
- CECHC and CECHE models replaced part of that hardware with software emulation, still allowing PS2 games but with slightly different compatibility.
- All later models, including the Slim and Super Slim, dropped PS2 backward compatibility entirely.
| Model | PS2 method |
|---|---|
| CECHA / CECHB | Hardware emulation |
| CECHC / CECHE | Software emulation |
| Later models | Not supported |
If playing PS2 discs on a PS3 matters to you, verify the exact model number before buying. A console that merely looks like an early fat unit may still be a later revision without PS2 support.
Because native PS2 emulation on later consoles is not practical, the supported early fat models remain the only straightforward route to running PlayStation 2 software directly on PS3 hardware.
