PS1 backward compat

PlayStation 1 Backward Compatibility

Good news for fans of the original PlayStation: every PS3 model ever made can play PS1 games. Sony built this support into the hardware and firmware of the entire line, from the launch fat units through the Slim and Super Slim revisions. Unlike PS2 support, which was quietly removed over time, PS1 compatibility was never dropped.

What works

  • Original discs. Insert a genuine PlayStation game disc and the console runs it natively.
  • Digital classics. PS1 titles purchased as digital downloads play through the same compatibility layer.

Handy features

The built-in PS1 emulator adds quality-of-life touches that the original hardware lacked. You can apply smoothing filters to soften the look of low-resolution textures, and you can create virtual memory cards on the PS3's internal storage, freeing you from juggling physical cards and their limited block counts.

No homebrew required

PS1 playback is an official feature, so it works on a completely stock console. You do not need custom firmware to enjoy your original PlayStation library on any PS3.

This makes the PS3 one of the most accessible ways to revisit the first PlayStation generation, since compatibility is universal across the family and requires no special setup.
