Firmware versions
Firmware Versions and What They Mean
The PlayStation 3's firmware is the system software that controls everything from the XMB menu to game compatibility. Sony released a long series of updates over the console's life, and the version your system runs has a direct bearing on which modding methods are available to you.
Reading the Version Number
Firmware versions follow a simple decimal format such as 4.91 or 4.92. The current official release sits in the 4.9x range, which is the latest line Sony has shipped. You can check your installed version in the system information section of the settings menu.
The Three Flavors
- OFW (Official Firmware) — the unmodified software shipped by Sony. A console on OFW alone cannot run homebrew.
- CFW (Custom Firmware) — a modified firmware that permanently enables homebrew, available only on compatible hardware.
- HFW (Hybrid Firmware) — a lightly patched OFW that keeps Sony's version number but opens the door for the HEN exploit.
| Type | Homebrew | Hardware |
|---|---|---|
| OFW | No | Any |
| CFW | Yes | CFW-capable only |
| HFW + HEN | Yes | Any |
Version Matching Matters
Modding tools target specific firmware versions. Staying current with the 4.9x line is generally recommended, since most modern guides and exploits are built around it.
Knowing your firmware type and number is the second half of planning a mod, right alongside identifying your hardware model.
