Slim Models (CECH-2000/2500 vs 3000)
The Slim revision arrived as a thinner, quieter, and more power-efficient redesign of the original hardware. From a modding perspective, however, the Slim family is split down the middle. The deciding factor is the CECH number, and the difference between an early Slim and a late one is the difference between full custom firmware and a more limited path.
The CFW-Capable Slims
The CECH-2000 and CECH-2500 series are fully compatible with custom firmware. These units share enough with the older hardware that the established CFW toolchain works on them. If you find a Slim in this range, it can do nearly everything a Fat can.
The CECH-3000 Limitation
The CECH-3000 series introduced hardware changes that block traditional CFW installation. These consoles are HEN-only, meaning they rely on PS3HEN running on top of official or hybrid firmware instead.
| Series | CFW | HEN |
|---|---|---|
| CECH-2000 | Yes | Yes |
| CECH-2500 | Yes | Yes |
| CECH-3000 | No | Yes |
Check the Digits
A "20" or "25" in the model code is good news for CFW. A "30" means you are limited to HEN. Always verify before purchase.
For most users HEN provides the features they want, but if true CFW is essential, steer toward the 2000 or 2500 series.
