Save management
Save Data Management
Game saves on the PlayStation 3 are normally tied to a single console and account through copy protection, which makes moving them between systems awkward. Homebrew save tools exist to back up, restore, and unlock saves so you can keep your progress safe and share it.
The challenge of save copy protection
Many PS3 saves are locked to the console that created them. To use a save from another system, it must be re-signed for your own console and account. Dedicated save-management homebrew handles this resigning automatically.
Common tasks
- Backing up saves to a USB drive or computer for safekeeping
- Restoring saves to the console after a reinstall or hardware change
- Resigning downloaded or transferred saves so they load on your system
- Applying cheats or unlocks packaged as modified save files
Save mounting
Some managers can mount a save's encrypted contents, exposing the individual files inside. This lets advanced users inspect or edit save data directly before repacking it. Mounting is a read-and-write operation on protected data, so work on copies.
Always keep an untouched backup before editing or resigning a save. A botched edit can corrupt the file and lose your progress permanently.
Tip
Note which account a save belongs to. Resigning to the wrong user ID is a common reason a save refuses to load. saves resign
