Freezing

Freezing or Crashing

The console locks up during games or in the menu, sometimes forcing a hard power-off, and may freeze again soon after restarting. Stability Crash

Likely Causes

  • Overheating from dust, a tired fan, or dried thermal paste.
  • A corrupt system database confusing the menu.
  • A failing or fragmented internal hard drive.
  • Unstable homebrew, a bad backup, or too many background plugins.

Fixes

  1. Address heat first. Place the console in open air, clean the vents, and feel whether it freezes only after warming up. Heat-related crashes are the most common kind.
  2. Rebuild the database from Safe Mode. This repairs the index that the menu and games rely on and resolves many random freezes.
  3. Test the drive. Back up your data, then consider reseating or replacing the internal hard drive if freezes persist.
  4. Disable nonessential homebrew and plugins one at a time to find a culprit.
  1. Cool the console and clean it.
  2. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode.
  3. Isolate by removing plugins and testing stock games.
  4. Replace the drive if all else fails.

Repeated hard power-offs can corrupt data. Whenever possible, wait a moment to see if the console recovers before pulling power.
