FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about modifying the PlayStation 3. If you are new to the scene, read these before starting so you understand which path fits your console.
What is the difference between CFW and HEN?
Custom Firmware (CFW) replaces the console's system software entirely and gives the deepest level of access. It only runs on older "unpatched" PS3 models with an exploitable bootloader. Homebrew ENabler (HEN) is a software exploit that grants similar abilities at runtime on top of official firmware, so it works on newer models that cannot accept true CFW. CFW is more powerful and persistent; HEN must be re-activated each boot.
Which models can run CFW?
Generally the older "Fat" units and early "Slim" units (the CECH-20xx series and earlier) can run CFW. Later Slim and all Super Slim models are hardware-patched and are limited to HEN.
How do I know which model I have?
Check the CECH model number on the sticker underneath the console, then confirm the firmware version in the system settings. The model number tells you whether CFW is possible.
Is it safe to go online with a modified PS3?
No. Connecting a modified console to the PlayStation Network risks a permanent console ban. Keep your modded system offline or use it only for local play.
Will modding delete my saves and games?
Properly installed HEN preserves your data, but always back up saves first. Mistakes during a CFW install can lead to data loss.
Can I brick my console?
HEN carries very low brick risk. CFW installs and firmware flashing carry more risk, so follow each step carefully and never interrupt a firmware write.
Do I need to open the console?
No. Both HEN and modern CFW installs are software-only for supported models.
Can I undo the modifications?
Yes. HEN can simply be removed, and many CFW setups can be reverted to official firmware.
