Package Manager

The Package Manager (.pkg installs)

Most PS3 homebrew is distributed as a .pkg file: a self-contained installer package, the same format Sony uses for official downloads. On a console with custom firmware or HEN, you install these through the system's Package Manager, found under the Game column of the XMB.

Where packages come from

The Package Manager can install from two main sources:

  • Storage media — a USB drive or the internal hard drive, where it scans for .pkg files to install
  • Direct/network installs offered by managers and HEN tools, which can fetch and apply packages for you

Installing a package

  1. Copy the .pkg file onto a USB drive at the root or in a recognized folder
  2. Insert the drive and open Package Manager, then choose Install Package Files
  3. Select your storage device and pick the package from the list
  4. Wait for the install to finish, then find the new app on the XMB

Only install packages from sources you trust. A .pkg can contain any code, and a malicious or corrupt package can damage your system software.

Note

Some homebrew ships as separate data packages alongside the main app. Install all required pieces, or the app may launch with missing files. pkg install
