Alongside RetroArch, the PS3 homebrew scene offers a number of standalone emulators: dedicated programs built to emulate a single console rather than many. Because their authors can tune everything specifically for one target system and for the Cell processor, a good standalone build sometimes delivers better speed or compatibility than the equivalent general-purpose core.
Why choose standalone
- Focused optimization. The code targets one platform, so quirks and timing can be handled more precisely.
- Specialized features. Some ports expose options that matter only to a particular system.
- Alternative when a core struggles. If a RetroArch core runs poorly, a separate emulator may fare better.
Trade-offs
The convenience cost is real. Each standalone emulator has its own interface, its own controller mapping, and its own configuration files, so a library built from many separate programs lacks the unified experience that RetroArch provides. You also have to track updates for each one individually.
Mix and match
Many users run RetroArch as their everyday frontend and keep one or two standalone emulators on the side for systems where the dedicated build clearly performs better. There is no harm in installing both.
As always, results vary with the system being emulated. The Cell CPU handles older 8-bit and 16-bit machines with ease, while more demanding consoles push it harder regardless of whether you use a standalone build or a core. CFW
