Super Slim Models (CECH-4000)

The Super Slim, identified by the CECH-4000 series, was the final hardware redesign of the PlayStation 3. It is recognizable by its smaller footprint and the distinctive sliding manual disc cover that replaced the motorized slot-loading drive. While it is a perfectly capable gaming machine, it sits at the bottom of the modding hierarchy.

HEN Only

No Super Slim console can run traditional custom firmware. The hardware revisions Sony made for this generation closed off the methods that CFW depends on. Instead, every CECH-4000 unit is limited to HEN, the Homebrew ENabler, which runs as an exploit layer on top of hybrid firmware.

HEN Is Still Powerful

Do not be discouraged. PS3HEN provides homebrew app support, backup loading, and many of the same conveniences as CFW for everyday use. The main limitations involve certain low-level features and persistence after reboot.

What You Give Up

  • HEN must be re-enabled after each cold boot rather than being always active.
  • A handful of advanced CFW-exclusive tools and plugins are unavailable.
  • Flash-level modifications and recovery options are more restricted.

If a seller advertises a Super Slim as "CFW capable," treat the claim with skepticism. The CECH-4000 hardware cannot run CFW, only HEN.

For buyers who simply want homebrew and emulators, a Super Slim on hybrid firmware is a clean, reliable, and affordable option.
