Network Connection Problems

The console fails its connection test, drops offline mid-session, or cannot reach online services despite other devices working fine. Network Wi-Fi

Likely Causes

  • Weak Wi-Fi signal or interference, worsened by the console's aging 2.4GHz-only radio.
  • Router settings the PS3 dislikes, such as certain band or security modes.
  • Incorrect manual IP or MTU values.
  • A network test that fails only at the final service step because those servers are retired.

Fixes

  1. Test with a wired connection. A direct Ethernet cable removes signal strength from the equation and is the most reliable diagnostic.
  2. On your router, make sure a 2.4GHz band is active and using WPA2. The console cannot join 5GHz-only or WPA3 networks.
  3. Run the connection test again. Reaching the internet step successfully means your link is fine even if the final service check fails.
  4. If pages or downloads stall, try setting MTU manually to a lower value and using a custom DNS in the connection settings.

Reading the Test Results

The connection test runs in stages. An "obtain IP address" success with a later failure points to a service or DNS issue, not your local network.

Several original online services have shut down. A failed sign-in does not always mean your console is broken.
