Methods Overview

There are a few different ways to unlock homebrew on a PlayStation 3, and the right one depends mainly on which console model you own and what you want to do with it. This page introduces each approach so you can pick a path before diving into the detailed guides.

The short version

Some PS3 models can run permanent Custom Firmware (CFW), which is the most powerful option. Models that cannot run CFW can usually still run PS3HEN, a temporary homebrew enabler. Both let you enjoy legal homebrew, but they differ in how they install and how much they can do.

The main routes

  • CFW Custom Firmware permanently replaces the official system software. It is the most capable option but is only available on CFW-compatible models.
  • HEN PS3HEN is a Homebrew Enabler that works on retail-compatible consoles, including HEN-only models. It must be re-enabled after every reboot.
  • HFW Hybrid Firmware is an official-but-modified firmware that allows HEN to run on the latest system version.
  • Hardware Hardware flashers are clip or interface tools used by advanced users for recovery and downgrade on certain models.

How to choose

If your model supports CFW and you want maximum capability with the least friction after setup, CFW is usually preferred. If your console can only run retail firmware, PS3HEN paired with HFW is the standard route. The comparison page breaks down the trade-offs in detail.

Always confirm your exact model and firmware first. Choosing the wrong method can waste time or, in rare cases, leave the console unbootable.
