Backing up your data

Backing Up Your Data

Before making any system changes, copy your important files to a computer. CFW installs rarely erase data, but a backup costs you nothing and protects you against mistakes, a corrupted Memory Stick, or a reformatted card.

What to back up

  • Game saves — found in the PSP/SAVEDATA folder on the Memory Stick.
  • Screenshots and media — anything under PSP, PICTURE, MUSIC, or VIDEO.
  • Existing homebrew — your PSP/GAME folder, if you already have any.

How to copy the files

For models with Wi-Fi off or no Wi-Fi at all, the simplest route is a USB cable. On the PSP-1000, 2000, 3000, and Go, connect by USB and enable Settings > USB Connection; the Memory Stick (and the Go's internal storage) appears as a drive on your computer. Drag the folders to a safe place.

PSP Street (E1000)

The Street has no Wi-Fi, so USB transfer or a dedicated Memory Stick Pro Duo card reader is your only way to move files between the handheld and a computer. Plan around this before you begin.

The Go's internal storage

The PSP Go stores data on built-in flash memory in addition to any optional Memory Stick Micro. Back up both locations so nothing is missed.

Once your files are safely on a computer, you can proceed with confidence. If anything goes wrong, you simply copy your saves back afterward.
