The rubber membrane pads and metal dome contacts are easy to misplace or install upside down. Note the orientation of every pad as you remove it.
Reviving worn buttons
When face buttons, the D-pad, or the shoulder triggers need a hard press or stop working entirely, the conductive rubber membrane behind them has usually worn down or filled with grime. This is a cheap, satisfying repair.
Membrane versus contact
Each button presses a small conductive pad against a contact on the board. Over time the pad's carbon coating thins, so the circuit no longer closes reliably. Cleaning the board and replacing the rubber pad restores a crisp click.
- Access the buttonsRemove the battery and front shell to expose the button pads and their rubber membranes.
- Clean the contactsWipe the board pads with isopropyl alcohol to remove oxidation and finger oils.
- Replace the membranesSwap tired rubber pads for new ones, matching each to its button cluster.
- Reassemble and testRefit the buttons and shell, then press each one to confirm a clean, even response.
Shoulder buttons
The L and R triggers fail in a similar way and may also collect dust in their channels. note If a button physically sticks, the fault is usually the plastic key binding, not the membrane.
