Keeping CFW updated

The PSP's official firmware stopped at 6.61, so there are no more Sony updates to worry about. What does change over time is the custom firmware itself. Keeping ARK-4, your CFW, and any plugins current means bug fixes, better compatibility, and the occasional new feature.

What actually updates

  • The CFW project (most often ARK-4) releases new versions with fixes and improvements.
  • Plugins get their own updates and may need a matching CFW version.
  • The base 6.61 firmware stays fixed; never try to "update" past it.

How to update the CFW

  1. Check your installed CFW version in System Information or the recovery menu.
  2. Obtain the newer installer for the same project you already use.
  3. Copy it to the memory card and run it from the Game menu, just as during the original install.
  4. Reboot and confirm the new version in System Information.

Infinity usually stays put

Updating your CFW installer normally does not remove Infinity, so permanence is preserved. If a major update calls for it, simply re-run the Infinity installer afterward to restore automatic boot.

Update one thing at a time

Change the CFW or plugins individually, then test, so any new problem is easy to trace. Keep the previous working installer on hand in case you need to roll back, and always keep the battery charged during any install.
