Homebrew won't run

Homebrew Won't Run

You copied a homebrew application to the Memory Stick but it does not appear in the Game menu, or selecting it returns "The game could not be started (80020148)."

Common Causes

  • Incorrect folder path. Homebrew must sit in PSP/GAME with each app in its own subfolder containing EBOOT.PBP.
  • No active CFW. Unsigned homebrew only runs under custom firmware; on official firmware it is blocked.
  • Firmware too low for the app. Some homebrew requires a minimum kernel version the EBOOT targets.
  • Corrupt EBOOT. A bad copy or wrong unpacking breaks the executable.

Fixes

  1. Verify the structure: PSP/GAME/AppName/EBOOT.PBP, with no extra nested folder.
  2. Confirm CFW is currently active by checking the firmware string shows a custom tag such as PRO or ARK.
  3. If you see error 80020148, the EBOOT needs a higher kernel; run it through your CFW's VSH or kernel mode, or update the homebrew version.
  4. Re-extract and re-copy the application to rule out a damaged EBOOT.

Quick Check

Older homebrew built for firmware 1.50 will not run on modern 6.61 CFW without a compatibility layer. Prefer current builds when available.

Still failing? Test a known-good homebrew like a simple file manager to confirm CFW itself is healthy before blaming the app.
