Game Boy and GBA on the PSP

Nintendo's handheld line feels right at home on the PSP. The original Game Boy and Game Boy Color are trivial to emulate, while the Game Boy Advance is more demanding but very playable with the right settings.

Game Boy and Game Boy Color

These run at full speed with no fuss. Because the source resolution is tiny, emulators offer scaling and color options so the small image fills more of the PSP's screen.

Game Boy Advance

The GBA pushes the hardware harder. Many games hit full speed, but heavier titles benefit from frameskip and a higher CPU clock. Emulator quality varies, so trying more than one build for a stubborn game is worthwhile.

Perfect Form Factor

Since the GBA was itself a handheld, its games map naturally to the PSP's buttons and feel native in the hand.

Improving GBA Speed

  • Increase the CPU clock toward the maximum allowed.
  • Enable light frameskip only when needed.
  • Disable sound enhancements if audio crackles or lags.

Some GBA emulators need a BIOS file for certain games. Provide only a BIOS you dumped from your own hardware.
