Memory Stick Errors

The PSP reports the Memory Stick is unreadable, prompts to format it repeatedly, loses files after a session, or refuses to save data.

Common Causes

  • Filesystem corruption. Removing the stick during a write or a sudden power loss damages the FAT structure.
  • Wrong format. The PSP expects FAT32; exFAT or NTFS will not mount.
  • Counterfeit or failing card. Fake high-capacity sticks report false sizes and corrupt data once real space fills.
  • Dirty contacts. Oxidized pins cause intermittent read failures.

Fixes

  1. Back up any recoverable files, then format the stick as FAT32 using the PSP's own Settings menu for best compatibility.
  2. On a computer, run a disk check or full reformat to FAT32 if the PSP cannot complete the format.
  3. Verify true capacity with a card-test utility; if it reports fake size, replace the card.
  4. Gently clean the metal contacts with isopropyl alcohol and reseat firmly.

Always use the PSP's USB mode or a safe eject before pulling the stick. Yanking it mid-write is the top cause of corruption.

Note Keep a periodic backup of your SEPLUGINS, ISO, and save folders so a corrupt card never costs you your setup.
