There are two broad ways onto custom firmware: the modern software route and the older Pandora's Battery hardware route. The table below summarizes how they differ so you can pick the right one for your console and goal.
| Aspect | Software route (6.61 + CFW + Infinity) | Pandora's Battery |
|---|---|---|
| Best models | All models (1000, 2000, 3000, Go, Street) | Mainly PSP-1000 (Phat) |
| Hardware needed | Just a memory card and the PSP | Modified battery + Magic Memory Stick |
| Main use | Standard modding of a healthy console | Unbricking and installing old firmware |
| Difficulty | Low, well documented | Higher, more specialized |
| Risk | Low | Moderate, but can recover bricks |
| Result | 6.61 CFW, permanent via Infinity | Reflashed firmware, recovery state |
The short version
If your PSP turns on and reaches the menu, use the software route: update to 6.61, run ARK-4 or 6.61 PRO, then install Infinity. Only reach for Pandora's Battery when you need to revive a bricked PSP-1000 or otherwise cannot boot normally.
Both paths end with a fully functional custom firmware; they simply differ in how they get there and what hardware they require.
