PSP-1000 (Phat)

The original PSP, often called the Phat or Fat, is the launch model and remains a favorite among modders. Its older hardware is the most open of the entire family, which gives it a few advantages the slimmer models lack.

Why enthusiasts love the 1000

  • RAM hacks — the 1000's memory layout allows extra-RAM tricks that benefit demanding emulators and homebrew.
  • Infrared port — a genuine IR transmitter usable with remote-control homebrew.
  • Fully removable everything — battery, Memory Stick, and UMD drive all come out easily, which makes recovery simpler.

Installing CFW

Get the system to official firmware 6.61, then install ARK-4 (or 6.61 PRO) for a lightweight setup, optionally adding 6.61 Infinity to make it permanent. ARK-4 fully supports the 1000.

Best recovery story

The PSP-1000 has the most reliable Pandora's Battery support of any model. A bricked Phat can almost always be brought back to life, which makes it a very forgiving unit to experiment with.

Despite its forgiving recovery, never interrupt a firmware update. Keep it charged or plugged in throughout the 6.61 update and any Infinity flash.

If you are choosing a PSP specifically to mod and tinker with, the 1000 is the most hacker-friendly option in the lineup.
