Screen replacement

The display ribbon cables are thin and tear easily. Work slowly, keep tension off the connectors, and discharge static before touching the panel. A cracked replacement LCD cannot be undone.

Replacing the LCD

Screen faults include dead backlights, lines across the panel, cracked glass, and unresponsive image output. Replacement LCDs are sold for every model, and many owners upgrade a dim original to a brighter IPS panel for better colour and viewing angles.

Know your panel

The PSP-1000 screen has its own quirks and a different backlight arrangement than the Slim models, so order a panel matched to your exact model. IPS upgrade kits sometimes need a small ribbon adapter, so check compatibility before buying.

  1. Disassemble the front
Remove the battery, then the faceplate and screen bezel to expose the LCD assembly.
  2. Release the ribbons
Flip up the locking flaps on the connectors and gently slide each ribbon free.
  3. Swap the panel
Lift the old LCD out, set the replacement in place, and route its ribbons cleanly.
  4. Test before sealing
Reconnect the battery and power on to confirm a clean image, then reassemble.

Verifying the result

Check brightness at every level and look for dead pixels or backlight bleed at the edges. note If the image is reversed or scrambled, a ribbon is seated backwards or not fully locked.
