Genesis / Master System
Sega 16-bit and 8-bit Emulation
The PSP is an excellent home for Sega's classic consoles. Emulators in this family typically cover several related systems at once, so a single program can play your whole Sega retro collection.
Supported Systems
- Genesis / Mega Drive, the 16-bit flagship, runs at full speed with sound.
- Master System and Game Gear, the 8-bit line, are even lighter to emulate.
- SG-1000 support sometimes appears in the same emulator.
One Emulator, Many Consoles
Because these systems share heritage, multi-system emulators are common. You point them at a ROM folder and they detect the format automatically.
Performance
Genesis emulation is generally smooth across the catalog. The widescreen PSP screen stretches the 4:3 image, so most emulators offer aspect-ratio options to keep the picture looking correct.
| System | Speed |
|---|---|
| Genesis / Mega Drive | Full speed |
| Master System | Excellent |
| Game Gear | Excellent |
Tips
- Map the Genesis three- or six-button layout to the PSP face buttons in the options menu.
- Use the scaling settings to choose between sharp pixels and a fuller screen.
Game Gear titles use a different palette and screen size; pick the right system mode if the emulator does not auto-detect it.
