PS1 via POPS
Playing PS1 Games with POPS
The PSP can run original PlayStation games through POPS, Sony's built-in PS1 emulation layer. Unlike third-party emulators, POPS was designed by Sony for the official PlayStation Network classics, so compatibility and speed are generally excellent.
How It Works
PS1 discs are converted into a special EBOOT.PBP that wraps the disc image. Once converted, the game appears in the Game menu and boots almost exactly as a downloaded PSone Classic would.
- Create a disc image from a PS1 game you own.
- Use a conversion tool to produce a POPS-compatible EBOOT.PBP.
- Place the resulting folder under PSP/GAME.
- Launch it from the XMB like any other title.
Multi-Disc Support
Conversion tools can bundle several discs into one EBOOT, letting long RPGs switch discs from an in-game menu without swapping files.
| Aspect | POPS |
|---|---|
| Source | Official Sony layer |
| Compatibility | Very high |
| Format | EBOOT.PBP |
Compatibility is high but not perfect. A handful of games have audio or timing quirks, and the running POPS version can affect results.
For most of the PS1 library, POPS delivers a smooth, near-original experience on the handheld.
