Step 1: update to 6.61
Read before you begin
Make sure your PSP has a charged battery and stays plugged in throughout. A power loss during a firmware update is one of the few ways to brick the console. Do not interrupt the process once it starts.
Step 1: Update to 6.61
Every software install starts from Sony's final official firmware, 6.61. Getting your console to this exact version first ensures the CFW installer and Infinity behave as expected.
-
Check your current versionOn the XMB, open Settings, then System Settings, then System Information. Note the firmware number. If it already reads 6.61, you can skip straight to the CFW installer.
-
Get the 6.61 updaterObtain the official 6.61 update file and place it on your memory card in the location the system update expects. Confirm the file copied completely before continuing.
-
Run the updateLaunch the update from the Game menu, accept the agreement, and let it run. The screen may go dark briefly; this is normal. Keep the console plugged in and untouched.
-
Confirm 6.61After the PSP restarts, return to System Information and verify it now reports 6.61. Only proceed once this is confirmed.
With the console confirmed on 6.61, you are ready for step two: running the CFW installer to boot into custom firmware.
