FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to the questions newcomers ask most often about PSP custom firmware.
Is installing custom firmware legal?
Modifying hardware you own is generally permitted in many regions. Running backups of games you own and homebrew is the intended use. Downloading commercial games you do not own is piracy and is not covered here.
Will CFW brick my PSP?
Modern 6.61 CFW is very safe when you follow steps carefully and keep power stable. The main risk comes from interrupting a flash write or using files meant for the wrong model.
Which models can run CFW?
The PSP-1000, 2000, 3000, and Go can all run custom firmware. Recovery options differ; Pandora battery recovery does not work on the Go.
What is the difference between temporary and permanent CFW?
Temporary CFW loads into RAM and disappears at shutdown. Permanent CFW, installed with a tool like Infinity, survives restarts by hooking the boot process.
Do I need to be on 6.61 first?
Yes. Most current CFW expects official firmware 6.61, so update to it before installing.
Can I still play original UMD games?
Yes. CFW does not stop UMD playback; it only adds homebrew and backup support.
Will CFW let me go online on the PlayStation Network?
The PSP's online services are largely retired, and using CFW online is discouraged.
How do I uninstall CFW?
For temporary CFW, just power off. For permanent installs, run the installer's uninstall option to restore stock boot.
