Before You Begin
A little preparation prevents nearly every problem people run into when modding a PSP. Work through this checklist before you start installing anything.
- Confirm your model and firmwareIdentify whether you have a 1000, 2000, 3000, Go, or Street, and check that the system is on or can reach official firmware 6.61. Both details determine which method you follow.
- Charge the batteryKeep the PSP above half charge, or leave it plugged into the wall adapter throughout. A shutdown during a firmware step is the most common cause of a brick.
- Prepare a Memory StickHave a working Memory Stick Pro Duo ready. The Go also has internal storage you can use. Make sure it is formatted and readable by the PSP.
- Back up your dataCopy your saves, screenshots, and any important files to a computer first. See the dedicated Backing Up page.
- Read the whole methodRead your chosen guide start to finish once before doing it, so nothing surprises you mid-process.
Do not interrupt firmware operations. Once an update or install begins, leave the system alone until it finishes and reboots on its own. Pulling the battery or pressing buttons at the wrong moment can damage the unit.
With these basics handled, you are ready to choose a method. The actual CFW install is quick; the preparation is what keeps it safe across every model.
