Safety & Risks
Modding a PSP is well-understood and, when done carefully, very safe. Modern CFW installs on 6.61 are largely software-based and reversible. Still, it is important to understand the genuine risks before you start.
The biggest danger is power loss during a firmware operation. If the PSP shuts off while updating to 6.61 or flashing Infinity, it can be left unbootable (bricked). Always keep the battery charged or stay plugged into the official AC adapter.
Understanding bricks
A "brick" is a PSP that no longer boots normally. Most so-called bricks are recoverable. A PSP-1000 or early 2000 can usually be revived with a Pandora's Battery. The 3000 and Go are hardware-patched against Pandora, so prevention matters more for those models.
Reducing your risk
- Use a genuine, healthy battery and the official charger.
- Only run files from trusted community sources.
- Do not pull the Memory Stick mid-install.
- Follow steps in order and never skip ahead.
Avoid sketchy "downgraders" and random downloads. Tools that claim to do everything in one tap can flash bad data to the system. Stick to the well-known options: ARK-4, 6.61 PRO, and Infinity.
Reversibility
Lightweight CFW such as ARK-4 in LCFW form leaves the official firmware untouched and simply stops loading if you remove its files. This makes it one of the lowest-risk ways to enjoy custom firmware on any model.
