Bricked PSP
Bricked PSP Recovery
After a failed firmware install or bad flash, the PSP no longer boots normally. A "brick" means the system software is damaged, but most bricks are recoverable.
Semi-Brick vs. Hard Brick
A semi-brick still shows some signs of life or a partial menu. A hard brick shows nothing at all. The recovery path differs, so identify which you have first.
Common Causes
- Power loss during a flash-writing installer.
- Flashing the wrong region or model's firmware.
- Deleting or corrupting critical flash0 system files.
Recovery Steps
- Prepare a service battery. Convert a spare battery into a Pandora battery using working hardware or a hardware modchip.
- Build a Magic Memory Stick. Use Pandora tools to write a recovery installer that the service battery will boot.
- Boot recovery. Insert both, power on, and the PSP loads the Pandora menu instead of damaged firmware.
- Reinstall firmware. Choose to install or restore 6.61, let it complete fully, then power off.
Pandora recovery does not work on the PSP Go or some late PSP-3000 boards. Confirm your model is supported before relying on it.
If the unit is a hard brick on unsupported hardware, recovery may require hardware-level reflashing beyond software tools.
