Firmware Versions
The PSP went through many official firmware revisions over its lifetime. For modding purposes, only one number really matters today: 6.61, the final firmware Sony ever released. Every modern CFW guide targets it.
Why 6.61 is the goal
Because 6.61 is the last official version, the entire current toolset is built around it. Installing ARK-4, 6.61 PRO, or 6.61 Infinity all assume your system is on 6.61 first. Being on the final firmware also means there are no further official updates that could interfere later.
| Your firmware | What to do |
|---|---|
| Below 6.61 | Update to 6.61 first (see Updating to 6.61) |
| Exactly 6.61 | Ready to install CFW now |
| 6.61 PRO / ME / LME | Already CFW; consider migrating to ARK-4 |
Reading the version safely
Check Settings > System Settings > System Information. A plain "6.61" means stock firmware. Any extra letters after the number indicate custom firmware is already present.
One target, every model
The 1000, 2000, 3000, Go, and Street all reach 6.61 and all run the same modern CFW. There is no model that is stuck on an older final version.
Do not try to install CFW on a firmware below 6.61. Update first. Skipping this step is a common source of failed installs.
